Prayer & Fasting

Life hits different sometimes, you know? You ever been in the gym pushing yourself till you can't do another rep? That burn in your muscles, that feeling like you can't go any further—but you do it anyway because that's how you get stronger.
Your soul needs that same kind of workout. All the stress, the questions, the stuff that keeps you up at night, it can weigh you down. But there's a way to build yourself up spiritually: prayer and fasting. It's about getting closer to Jesus by doing things that push us past our comfort zone. Prayer and fasting force us to stop relying on ourselves and start leaning on God. Just like working out shows you what you're made of, these spiritual practices show you what you're really hungry for—and point you straight to God.
What's Prayer, Really?
Prayer is just talking to God. That's it. No fancy language needed. Sometimes it's just, "God, I need help." He already knows what's going on with you, but He wants to hear from you anyway. Prayer isn't something you only do when everything falls apart—it's your direct line to the One who sees everything. The Bible says to "pray without ceasing." That's just an open invitation to stay connected.
What About Fasting?
Fasting is giving something up, usually food to make more space for God. It's not about punishing yourself or trying to score points with God. It's about showing what you really want. Fasting is saying, "God, I want You more than I want this thing." It's like hitting mute on the world so you can actually hear Him. When everything gets quiet, that's when God speaks and moves.
Why Do This?
These aren't just boxes to check off. They're about responding to God's invitation. Jesus prayed and fasted. When we do the same, we're not trying to impress God we're responding to His love. He's not sitting up there waiting for us to jump through hoops. He's already done the work. The table's set. We just gotta show up. Prayer is saying, "God, I'm here. I don't have all the answers, but I need You." Fasting helps you refocus when life pulls you in a million directions. We all have good things that can take over food, work, scrolling through social media, relationships. Fasting helps us put things back in order, with God at the top. It starves the things that are starving us. There's this guy Daniel in the Bible. He's trying to follow God in a place where nobody else is. When he realizes how far things have gotten off track, he starts fasting and praying not to get God's attention, but because of who God already is. That's what fasting does. It turns your attention away from everything else and points it back to God.
If You're Feeling Distant
Maybe you feel far from God right now. Maybe your prayers feel like they're hitting the ceiling and bouncing back. That's exactly where this starts. Prayer and fasting are God saying, "Come close." He already knows your whole story the struggles, the wins, the doubts and He's still calling you back. Here's the real deal: prayer and fasting don't just connect you to God, they change you. Over time, they rewire your heart. Think about starting to eat healthy. At first, you crave all the junk burgers, fries, candy. But if you stick with it, your cravings change. You start wanting the good stuff. Same thing spiritually.
The Bible says, "Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart." That doesn't mean God gives you whatever you want. It means He changes what you want. As you pray and fast, your desires start lining up with His. You stop praying, "God, bless my plans," and start praying, "God, help me want what You want." Over time, He reshapes your heart, how you think, how you react, how you love, how you live.
It's Okay If It Feels Uncommon or Uncomfortable
Prayer and fasting might feel awkward at first. Like learning to ride a bike you wobble, you fall, you wonder if it's even working. But if you keep showing up, something shifts. You find your groove. You sense God more clearly. You start to see He's been there the whole time watching, guiding, teaching, making you stronger.
If prayer feels strange or fasting feels hard, that doesn't mean you're doing it wrong. It means you're in the middle of the workout. You're under the weight. You're in the training ground—and that's exactly where God does His best work. You don't need to impress Him. You just need to press into Him.
Try This Week
Pray twice a day: Once when you wake up, once before bed. Keep it simple and real.
Fast from comfort: skip a meal, stay off social media, or give up whatever you usually turn to for a day. In that space, ask God to show up.
Keep showing up: you don't train because you're already strong. You train because you know you need Him.
Step under the weight. Pray. Fast. Trust that the same God who invited you in will give you the strength to finish strong.
